Lester Ho (@lesterhokw) is back this week with a talk on momentum. Coaches will tell you not to “grip and rip” a bar off the floor, but do you know why? The obvious answer might be “to hold/maintain your position”, but what does that really mean? Lester is here to decode these messages in this 2 part series on the role of momentum in your lifts.

Part 1

.

“Momentum is defined as the product of the mass and velocity of an object. In weightlifting, the goal is to generate sufficient momentum to displace the barbell overhead.

One of the common mistakes related to momentum is that it should be generated as quickly as possible (i.e. straight off the ground). As displayed in the left and middle frames, generating momentum off the ground too quickly or too early results in insufficient bar displacement being generated eventually. Keeping peak velocity as a constant, if the largest amount of momentum (peak velocity x mass) is generated at a higher height, the same amount of momentum can carry the mass further for more displacement of the barbell.

Understanding how momentum is generated and at which points of the lift it should and should not be generated or present, it will allow you to be more efficient in your lifts and allowing the mass of the barbell to work for you, instead of against you especially when going for a PB.”
