It’s been long overdue since we have had Lester Ho (@lesterhokw) on our channel. Today, he’s here to discuss the implications of technique and how it affects the way an athlete generates power and subsequent pull under.
.
The Point of Maximum Acceleration.
.
The intention of the first two pulls is to generate velocity and subsequently momentum on the bar to displace it and allow space and time for the weightlifter to get under the bar.
.
Regardless of weight used, this concept of acceleration needs to be present and effort adjusted to match the load being lifted.
.
We all know the increase in velocity is acceleration so maximum acceleration should occur close to the tail end of the second pull.
.
Observing what’s going on with the individual this point of the lift allows a coach to understand whether 1) the timing of the transition under the bar is on point and 2) how the lifter is creating the transition under the bar.
.
What we have is two different lifters with technique built upon two different systems. As we can see with the lifter on the left, at the point of maximum acceleration, she is already transitioning under the bar. This indicates an emphasis on finishing with the upper body to initiate the transition.
.
On the other hand, the other lifter is still somewhat extended. This indicates an emphasis on finishing more with the legs and initiating what many call the pull under with predominantly with the lower body.
.
Therefore, being able to identify what’s going on with the individual using the outcome of the bar path creates more insight to understanding technique and subsequently understanding if certain features of technique are suitable for the individual.
.
So know your style and you may find that lifting becomes a whole lot easier.
