You play hard, but do you recover equally as hard? I find that as the years wear on, it’s not my ability or my motivation to push through my workouts that make the difference; but rather, how I stay on top of my recovery that will determine my performance. Fall behind on mobilizing the quads? You bet my knees will be knocking on my door within a few weeks and squatting with even an empty bar will take mental preparation and effort.

Good physical recovery efforts will bring nutrient rich blood through the body to remove waste build up, restore tissue health, and provide reinforcement to aide in the healing process. It can come in the form of massage, cupping, steam, sauna, contrast bathing, electrical stim units, and even more movement in the form of active recovery.

Mental recovery efforts are important as well to relax the mind, provide clarity and focus. This can come in the form of meditation, yoga, or even just hanging out with friends — preferably outside of the gym.

Remember, driving a Lamborghini might be fun and super sexy, but don’t be naive to the cost of it’s regular maintenance.
