Spent another great evening with Coach Wu (@wuchuanfu) over Skype learning and discussing the nuances of the Chinese weightlifting philosophy.

Tonight I asked questions about their emphasis on the finish in the second pull. The finish of this movement is placed strongly on the usage of the quads instead of the hips. An action they call “deng tui”. You can see this concept evidenced in these videos courtesy of Coach Wu of his athletes. Note the smooth yet powerful finish in the middle without any notable rattling of the bar as opposed to a more hip driven finish where an audible “crack” can often be heard.

The Chinese view weightlifting as an art and each lift is a performance for the audience. Each lift must be smooth, must be calm, must be powerful, must be beautiful.
