Here’s a follow-up to yesterday’s hook grip post. We had a lot of good feedback regarding the information and also had a few questions that popped through enough times that I felt warranted a post in and of itself.

The questions were:

1. Hook gripping with smaller hands — is it possible my hands are too small?

2. Hook gripping while dead lifting — yay or nay?

Here are my responses to both:

1. For men, the standard Olympic lifting bar diameter is 28mm; and for women, 25mm. I have encountered very few (if any I can recall off the top of my head) that cannot hook grip the bar when using the appropriate bar diameter. If you’re using some random bar, then all bets are off.

2. I suppose you could deadlift using a hook grip, but I imagine that hurting and being more distracting than helpful. A mix grip in this situation would be my go to option. You are not going to be snatching and cleaning as much as you would be deadlifting which is why a hook grip in these situations would be more appropriate.
