Having spent time with coaches in both the Russian and Chinese system, there are many parallels in technique — which shouldn’t be surprising since the Chinese system evolved from the Russian. However, the Chinese focus a lot on the tempo and rhythm of the lift to help athletes find their best timing with the barbell.

Liao Hui (69kg Chinese athlete) would sit there telling me about adjustments he would make on various athletes and used his hands to portray the tempo of the lift. It’s not surprising then to see Coach Wu be able to effortlessly coordinate an arch rock into a handstand push-up! Very cool experiencing all these different avenues of athlete development.
