A closer look at the Chinese Pull:
1. Teaches an athlete the timing of the extension into the pull under/reversal under the bar using proper back and arm involvement.
2. Builds confidence for the athlete helping them clearly see how they handle driving higher weights.
3. Most importantly, for those practicing a more Chinese-style pull, allows the athlete to feel how far forward of their base they can be without actually tipping forward.
That third piece probably holds the most value for me when incorporating such pulls into my practice. Being a heel driven lifter my entire career, changing to using a different part of my base and body to drive the barbell has proven to be quite challenging. It should also be noted that this movement, if not utilized properly, could create some motor patterns unfavorable towards your lifting. Having purpose in the drills you choose to execute will help determine their value in your daily programming.
