Christy Phillips (@christycrossfit), 5x CrossFit Games athlete from the Mid Atlantic region, came through for a visit last week. Her weightlifting coach (2000 Olympian @caraheads) and her have been working at cleaning up some details on both the snatch and the jerk.

Christy’s challenges on the snatch were:

1. Not relocating the feet to receive the bar.

2. Trying to “flip” the bar up with her back.

3. Brushing low on the thighs.

This resulted in her snatch hovering around 135lbs.

Very bummed I couldn’t make it out to Columbus, OH for The Arnold Sports Festival this year. These larger events are when you get to watch some great lifting and catch up with athletes and coaches that you don’t get to interact with on a regular basis. PRs are made and stories are shared over beers post competition.

You can then further imagine my disappointment when I learned Lydia Valentin (-75, Spain) was putting up a workshop the very same weekend.

Fortunately, one of my remote athletes Jennifer Hsia went out to attend the fun and sent over a detailed summary of her experience.

How can you tell if you have legs built for weightlifting? We call this the “HK No Hands Get-up” test.

Step 1: Smile

Step 2: Place your leg(s) underneath you

Step 3: Effortlessly, stand up

For the record, she can do this with or without weightlifting shoes. And yes, we make her do this over and over again ‘cause it is just that amazing.

The key to adult learning is repetition, especially for my masters athletes who are picking up Olympic-style weightlifting later in the game. Quality repetitions over lots of volume in the mid range intensities will help lock in those movement patterns. Masters athlete Marilou Seiff demonstrates how patience and practice makes PRs with her 73lbs hang snatch PR. Oh, and I tossed in a snatch balance at the end ‘cause those looked really good too.
