There’s technique to missing weight that can be overlooked by new weightlifters entering the scene — such as missing a weight behind. Having the grip wide enough to allow a successful pass behind your body ensures that if that bar is going too far back that you can safely eject out front. Believe it or not, most new lifters are afraid or won’t miss behind the body due to the uncertainty of what or how it might happen.

The muscle snatch is a great exercise to aide in developing the rotational strength required in pulling under and then turning over during the 3rd pull phase of the snatch.

Added benefits for the beginner include training the 1st and 2nd pull under reduced loads to enhance motor control capabilities while still being able to produce a good stimulus in other areas of the lift.

Where are you looking when you’re setting up for your lift? Down, to the side, or maybe you just don’t know?

The eyes guide proprioception for the rest of the body. Look down and you’ll go down. Look up and suddenly your trunk is a little bit taller waiting to receive the bar overhead or on your shoulders.

Try this on for size the next time you lift: Perform one lift looking down 6ft in front of you. Then, try one lift looking at a fixed point a distance away above the horizon level. Which felt better?
