The question came up recently of what the rate of descent should be for a squat. Should it be fast with the body dropping into the hole or slow and controlled as you make your way down?

Priority is given to maintaining the (upright) angle of the trunk so the rate of descent should allow for the body to maintain this line of action. Move too fast and the bar might crush you. Move too slow and you’re eating up valuable gas.

When it comes to the question of equipment, I tend to be of the opinion that when it’s time, you will know. In fact, I even try to discourage the use of gear in the earlier stages of learning how to lift for experience dictates that once you gear up, you rarely gear down.

Weightlifting shoes, on the other hand, are of a different vein. Position is king when it comes to accessing proper technique so why hold off on something that will improve your rate of learning on such a complex motor skill.

Setting the back into absolute extension before lift off is important for a good connection between the platform and the bar. Think of it this way. If your hips are the generator, then your trunk is your transmission. Any slack in your system will result in energy (read power) being redirected to stabilize this slack.

The body likes to follow the path of least resistance. Don’t believe me? Stand tall, keep your shins ram rod vertical and bend over by pushing your hips back like you are trying to touch a wall behind you. If you did this correctly, you should feel an overwhelming tightness, aka stretch, in your hamstrings. Now stay there. It gets expensive after a while doesn’t it? Imagine now if you had a barbell loaded with “insert BIG number here” and still had to maintain this position. Got the point?
