One of the first concepts Coach Wu (@wuchuanfu) talked to me about when we first started chatting about weightlifting was this idea of balancing the system. Through balance, the body can move with more efficiency essentially minimizing unnecessary muscular activation so that the energy created by the legs can get carried through more readily to the barbell.

Exercises can be repurposed to fit the needs of the athlete. Use lighter loads to hone in technique, dial up speed, increase power; and most importantly (in my opinion), heighten your awareness of interacting with the weight.

What an exciting weekend with USAW nationals! We had over 400 lifters registered equally split between male and female contenders. Each year, we find the number of athletes within this sport growing and also the number of athletes qualifying for national meets increasing. This is an exciting time for our sport.

Here’s a congratulations to my friends down at Superior Athletic Advantage (@crossfitsaa) — Mallory Rawlings (@malrawlings) — for competing in her first national meet. Mallory competed in the 58kg weight class and went 4/6 (62kg snatch, 77kg clean&jerk). Great job!

FuBarbell coach/athlete Kristin Newman (@strength_geek) at USAW nationals this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Kristin (+75kg) did an outstanding 83kg snatch and 105kg clean&jerk for a total of 188. A big shout out and thanks to Jasha Faye of Jasha Faye weightlifting for helping coach Kristin through her session.

The Chinese pride their pulls on being fast, smooth, and close to the body. It’s so rhythmic that this 63kg/138lbs lifter can make a 130kg/286lbs double look just as effortless as his 90kg/198lbs warm up. Being incredibly forward focused on their technique, the Chinese will not advance the weight in a training session unless the quality of the movement is precise.

With all the technical variations that come with the different styles of lifting, one (of a few) things remain the same. Coaches want you to move from the legs to the torso to the shoulders to the arms. This sequence of movements allow for a proper “build up” of energy to flow to the bar. Lester Ho (@lesterhokw) is here again this week to help you wrap your brain behind the science of these events:

“Lesson for today: Summation of Force.
