Andrea Searby snatch technique work 85%x1x8.

We’ve been working hard at getting Andrea to stay back during the finish of her pull. Things are really starting to come together putting her on the fast track to some larger numbers in the not too distant future.

A little late on the post today, but team FuBarbell just got done at the Tommy Kono Open - VIII in Sacramento, CA.

Everyone did a great job today fighting gravity. Congratulations goes out to StevO and Brandon for their inaugural meet. A huge thanks to Captain Pat (@paddygriffin) for doing a fantastic job co-coaching. And last, but not least, congratulations to Kristin Newman (@dancefightlift) for qualifying for The American Open and doing it on her first meet back!

Here’s a follow-up to yesterday’s hook grip post. We had a lot of good feedback regarding the information and also had a few questions that popped through enough times that I felt warranted a post in and of itself.

The questions were:

1. Hook gripping with smaller hands — is it possible my hands are too small?

2. Hook gripping while dead lifting — yay or nay?

Here are my responses to both:

The hook grip is the weightlifter’s version of a mini mixed grip providing extra purchase strength throughout the pull while also allowing the arms to stay relaxed for better force transfer.

Learned early, this technique will become automatic and the preferred choice when holding onto a barbell. Applied late in the learning, the athlete will feel reluctant and less confident often having to reduce the weight on the bar to allow the thumb to become better conditioned temporarily stunting the athlete’s progress.

In other words, if you don’t hook grip, start now.

A great advantage of pulling the lifts from different heights allows the athlete to shore up weaknesses and learn how to apply greater speed from a reduced line of action.

The below the knee position is often a pesky problem for most lifters still unfamiliar with how to forcefully push the knees back and negotiate this landmark.

To help remediate this issue, a couple double or triples at a good working weight either before and/or after the main practice session will help pump in some good volume towards building better movement pathways.
